Choosing Colors for Headshots

Our Chattanooga Headshot and Portrait studio have a stylist most of our clients see before their session, but a little guidance beforehand is nice. Here are a few things to keep in mind when selecting colors for your headshots. Colors can convey emotion, bring a brand together and speak before text is read. Some industries are very particular in colors and others more lax, choosing to keep with the neautrals or standard grey backgrounds. So when choosing clothes, it can be very helpful to know what your photographer is planning for. Once you have that, you can start picking outfits and use these tips to choose the best colors for your headshot photos.

1. When choosing a color for your headshot, the most important thing to consider is what colors you want your clothes and how it looks on the background to be used. Choose complementary colors.

2. If you're wearing a bright-colored shirt in the photo, make sure that the background behind you is complimentary.

3. Remember that colors can change depending on how they are edited so be sure to take note of post processing techniques of your photographer. We all have our own style.

4. Keep in mind that colors can have different meanings across cultures; for example, red might mean happiness in one country but anger in another. So if you have an international brand you may want to consider the colors for each country you are being represented in.

5. You may also want to think about which colors would match well with hair dye, tattoos, etc., especially if these features are visible in the picture and are part of your brand.

These are not all the things to consider, but a good start for a small company or individual looking to update professional headshots.
