Choose Your Look: Three Levels of Makeup for Your Portrait Session

As a contemporary portrait photographer in a studio that offers complimentary hair and makeup with most services, I often get asked by my clients about the makeup they should wear for their session. While some clients prefer a more natural look, others want to go all out with a full glam look. I will always say, Go Big or Go Home, but we want you to feel comfortable and love the photos. So, to make it easier for you, we put these three different options of makeup to choose from based on your preference and style.

  1. Natural makeup

If you're someone who prefers a more natural look, this level of makeup is perfect for you. It consists of mostly just concealer and blush, which helps to even out your skin tone and add a touch of color to your cheeks. This level of makeup is perfect for those who want to enhance their natural beauty without looking too made up. It's also a great option if you're someone who doesn't wear makeup on a regular basis and wants to keep things simple.

  1. Mid-level makeup

The mid-level makeup option is a step up from the natural makeup look. It includes an addition of mascara, a light lip and a hint of eyeshadow. This look helps to define your eyes and give your lips a subtle pop of color. It's perfect for those who want to add a bit more definition to their features without going too far beyond and everyday look. This level of makeup is ideal for those who want to look polished and put together, but aren’t comfortable with cosmetics.

  1. Full makeup

For those who want to go all out with their makeup, the full makeup option is perfect. This level of makeup includes false lashes, eyebrow work, and contouring as needed. It's perfect for those who want to make a statement and really stand out in their photos. This level of makeup is ideal for those who are used to wearing a lot of makeup and want to create a dramatic look for their session. Remember, in studio we work with strobe lighting and, much like in theater, some of the makeup will wash out in the lighting.

When it comes to choosing the right makeup for your portrait session, it's important to consider your personal style and preferences. Deciding on the level of makeup you want before your session, ensures that you look and feel your best in your photos. Don't forget to communicate with the team about your makeup preference so I can plan and execute accordingly. I can't wait to capture your beauty in your upcoming portrait session!
